In Vicky's clicker class, we work on 'Loose Leash Walking' teaching dogs and people all about walking with the leash kept loose. This is NOT 'heeling'. That comes later.

...they will be REALLY good at pulling, when they grow up and it will take quite some time to teach a new habit...of keeping the leash loose. |

One person, acting as the main distraction, and goal, hands out treats to dogs that arrive on a loosh leash. In the video on the right the black cocker almost arrives at the treats, on a loose leash, but she forgets, at the last second, and is backed away with.
The yellow lab puppy is thinking only of those treats. |

Loose Leash Walking (LLW) training continues. The yellow lab has been moved furthur away from the treat holder, to make it easier for him, and he is managing to take some loose leash steps, beside the leash holder.
SUCCESS! The black cocker has been practicing this longer, and she is furthur ahead in her training. Keeping her leash loose, she arrives at the treat holder, and she gets the treat!!! |

This student has been working with this dog for many weeks, and the dog is figuring out that they will keep moving forward, if she keeps the leash loose. Loose Leash Walking is for recreation time...when you want to relax, and 'smell the roses' with a 'non-pulling' dog. |

| We also work on 'targeting'. 'Targeting' is used to help a dog learn to pay attention. A dog that can target anywhere, is a dog that can pay attention anywhere!

A Little More Information About Clicker Training
Q: Is it better to use a clicker than your voice?
A Short answer: Yes! For a longer answer, read this.
Clicker training basics are simple, but not easy! Handling the clicker and delivering treats quickly and efficiently takes a lot of coordination.
Q: It is really important to deliver the treats very quickly after your 'click' sound?
A:Yes! Here's why.
'Treats' for clicker training don't need to be food, but do need to be something you can deliver quickly and easily, and that the dog can 'use' in a short time. |
