There are three ways to train with a clicker:

columncolumncolumn
columncolumncolumn
* Luring
columncolumncolumn
columncolumncolumn
* Catching a behaviour,

and...

*Shaping: Used to build behaviours that an animal would never do on their own.

SHAPE UP YOUR SHAPING: The Seminar

Join Vicky O'Connor, and spend the day improving your 'shaping with a clicker' skills. Learn how to shape retrieving, going round a pole, or any exercise where your dog just can't quite 'get it'. No force, no helping a confused dog, and confusing them even more. Build the behaviour, by strengthening tiny parts of the whole, finished product.

First, Vicky will demonstrate shaping, through the Levels, answering your questions about how to use this amazing tool.

Vicky has shaped:
  • 'Sparkle' the guinea pig, who has her own web page!
  • a Betta (fish) to jump out of the water, through a hoop
  • a very scared wild donkey, at a zoo, to come out of the woods, across a field, to target
  • a Lynx, to allow a harness to be put on, and to walk on leash
  • a horse, to retrieve
  • a Grizzly bear, to 'station'
  • feral cats, to target
  • dogs, of course!

Equally important, Vicky has taught the use of this skill, to human students, including Vancouver Zoo employees.

Watch...then do!

Learn what it feels like, to be shaped.

After watching dogs being shaped, play 'The Training Game' and experience being shaped. Vicky has developed a different way of playing 'The Training Game' where you will 'shape' a human, and also be shaped, with breaks, to ask and answer the question: "How is it for you?" because, people can talk, and animals can't. Find out what your dog experiences, and maybe thinks, while you are shaping them.

And then...

put your skills to work, shaping several dogs, and several exercises, to be sure you understand what you have learned.

We had a wonderful

Sue Ailsby clicker training seminar, in 2007. Visit Sue's 'Training Levels' site to see what we worked on. The Training Levels DVD is available, for $33.

This is a professionally shot DVD; an almost three hour video of seminar attendees working on the Levels exercises. Sue advises them on how they are doing...making suggestions as needed. Sue also demonstrates with Stitch. To order your copy of 'Testing the Levels' please click:
