In Her Words! Sparkle Explains Clicker Training |

Yes! I'm beautiful! And I am also educated! I am a Clicker Teacher!
Would you like to clickertrain YOUR human? I'll show you how! With patience, humans CAN be trained!

The first thing to teach your human, is that only certain treats are good enough for you. I myself like
little cut up pieces of grapes, and certain types of breakfast cereal.
Check carefully what you are being offered. If it is not suitable, just walk away! They will learn! |

Eating from your human's hand makes them very happy and helps them bond to you. Sometimes I am busy and don't
notice that my human has a treat for me, so she figured out that it is helpful to hold a clicker, which she clicks
to let me know that she has something tasty for me.
It did not take me too long to teach her to click the clicker before presenting me with a goody. |

By the way...have your human build you a 'quiet' clicker (much easier on our little ears!) by putting a lot
of electrician's tape around a regular clicker.
I have put a photo here of a regular clicker, and a quiet clicker in case your human is not sure how to build one.
They can also use a Snapple lid, which makes a short, sharp sound to get my attention. I'm pretty busy you know,
so don't want to hang around just 'in case'. |

Have your human practice giving you delicious treats in many different locations. Humans get stage fright
sometimes, so they need to practice! |

...and sometimes humans are slow! They need a little push to be reminded of what they are supposed to be
doing! When trained, they make nice pets! |

The second thing I taught my human, after teaching her to use the 'click' sound to let me know when
she had a good treat for me, was to get her to hold something for me to touch, so that I could remind her to give me a treat.
Silly person! So now I touch the little target, to let her know it is treat time, and she insists on clicking that
clicker to let me know she has a treat for me.
So, I touch the target to remind her to give me a treat...and she clicks the clicker, to let me know that she has a
treat for me...hmmm...just WHO is training WHOM here??? |

My human must have lost the first target, because now she is using a little wicker basket. I touch it to
let her know that it is treat time for me.
Being a guinea pig, this has been a trial for me! We guinea pigs have a great need to chew on things...and wicker is
just the best thing for chewing! Such a difficult thing it has been, to take my nose away from this delicious chewy wicker,
to get a (I have to admit) rather yummy treat!
So it has been...nose touch the handle...get a click and a treat. My human has problems seeing me touching it, though,
unless I touch the handle. I guess she can't see well when I am touching any other part. Ah...you humans! So slow, and
can't see all that well...sigh... |

Yes, I am picking up the basket. But you know why? Because my human got even slower, and didn't notice
when I put my teeth on the handle...so I had to pick it up and show it to her. Can you believe that!
Yes, it is slow going training a human, but as you can see, it CAN be done! If they are having trouble noticing
what you are doing, you may have to try just a little harder, but all in all, it is worth it. When properly trained,
they can be fun to have around! |
